Night Before Christmas was at first published as Visit from St. Nicholas. There is a lot of controversy about his popular Christmas poem.
Most of the fairy tales are written in the same form. The protagonist is poor, ill, stupid, exploited, or otherwise handicapped, but due to a series of events, he (or she) overcomes the initial circumstances and achieves some kind of success, which, in most cases, is presented by a better social position and/or a lot of money. Little Red Hen is a well-known story that, by definition is not a fairy tale but a fable. Feel free to check the differences between fables and fairy tales. Little Red Hen tells about the hen who wants to make a leaf of bread. This is not very complicated but demands some planning, patience, and, above all, activity. She has a few friends who live in the same place but none of them seems interested to help. So she does everything by herself and in the end denies everybody else to eat with her.
Is there any truth in fairy tales? Was there a real Rapunzel or Snow White? How about Red Riding Hood? How many autobiographical elements of authors can be recognized in classic stories for children?
